When you are at-risk . . .

If you are not constantly improving and expanding (formally like education or informally like finding a mentor or networking group) you need to recognize that there are limits to how far you will go. This is particularly true salary-wise. All other things being equal, if every job offer for the same work you are doing now is for less money that you are currently making, its because you're not worth what you're being paid now (thank your boss for just throwing cost-of-living raises at you and not demanding you add more text to the "skills" section of your resume).

On Management

Good management is a lot of things, but more than anything else, it is NOT fire-and-forget. Apply whatever fad of the year you want, as long as you are engaged, you'll never be caught short on any pertinent issue.

Why?

Why? Why are you hauling so much junk to/from the office? Do you really need a laptop briefcase _and_ a rollaboard-style file case to deal with your 'homework?' WTH kind of job do you have that you're still dealing with so much paper? Ever thought of refining your work process or maybe cutting down on water cooler time?

Never underestimate the power of infrequent air travelers, or the generally irrational, to poison the environment for the more seasoned or just more attentive of us.
