You are about to put for the proposition that the way forward in the field of X is to transition to a 2.0 model (an upgrade in general, not necessarily a given technical solution). A certain logic would seem to dictate that one should disseminate this proposition in a 2.0 fashion (dog-fooding of a sort). On the other hand, given the dominance of the 1.0 approach would it not make more sense to first pursue dissemination via a dead tree (the preferred medium of those whose lapels you are virtually shaking) for maximum impact?
Thoughts?

Eating your own dog food is wise when you want to institutionally force yourself harmonize your interests with your customers.
In most normal circumstances, it’s unnecessary.

Is there anything preventing you from doing both simultaneously?

Jeff: Let’s assume for argument sake that if a major dead tree outlet says yes, they get exclusive rights and I can’t post on my own, and if they post it is behind a paid firewall.

Usually, online books can be downloaded to print, however the converse is rarely true.
O’Reilly Media is a pretty innovative publisher if you want to see what’s possible at the cutting edge of publishing today.
Traditional publishers have been hurting financially, so you might want to revisit your content and see if a book is really the way to go, or if a magazine or journal article wouldn’t be better. They more frequently offer online versions along with a print version.

Kill some trees. Systemhack instead of systempunkt.
1.0 has the ability to go viral, and chances for that increase given that this little web cluster has a large readership with lots of thought-leaders.
The second generation architecture just isn’t in place to rely on it for a ramp-up. (Though it is in place for secondary effects.)

I say deadtree:
a) the important thing is that it gets read
b) the idea will have more oomph if its published by a deadtree format, otherwise people will write it off as “Look, people online publish stuff online saying being online matters.”
c) if you publish online you’ll be preaching to the choir
