Probably not the best Revolutionary War reference, but it’s not my strong point, so feel free to suggest alternatives … Anyway …

Moving the discussion from the comments to the main page because I think Cannoneer 4 raises some good points and has some good thoughts.

The problem I have with this or other attempts to go vigilante (as it were) is the lack of organization , standards and goals. Sounds funny coming from a guy who promotes the idea of an army of analysts, but as it has been pointed out previously, the idea is a crowd, not a mob (or something like that). Even a wiki has a cadre that enforces rules and keeps the riff-raff out while focusing on the core mission.

Another battle to fight: how do you defend yourself against charges that you yourselves are not simply a front for our Uncle? You know its coming, so what’s the plan? Not insurmountable, just needs to be done.

From where could you draw examples on how to move forward? Political campaigns? Oppo research, a platform everyone can agree on, dissem of talking points to be used in discrete messages, etc.?

Formal non-profit or just build it and let people come and go as they please? Most people have day jobs and their priorities adjust accordingly over time (helps motivation if you can dole out % of donations, for donations you need an bank/paypal account, with an account you have to answer to the IRS … you see where this is going).

Finally: who are you targeting and what is your goal? Jihadist sites? al-Jazeera? How do you measure effectiveness? Fewer suicide bombers? What are your baseline numbers now?

A pack, not a herd.

Organization = buildings full of pogues waiting for authorization.

Don’t bother to defend against charges of being pro-victory. Some ideologies are more sympathetic to freedom than others. Embrace the suck.

I don’t know how to move forward. Keep writing and linking and attracting more volunteer civilian PSYOP auxiliaries, maybe. The C-in-C gave an hour of his precious time to some bloggers Friday. That’s forward movement right there.

Counterpropagandists target the recipients of the hostile propaganda AND the senders. Civilian Irregular Computer Network Attack is out of my lane. All Americans have the right to counter free speech they don’t like with more free speech. I’m not sure hackers have a right to take down sites without coordination.

Measure of Effectiveness is poll numbers high enough to give our war leaders freedom of action.

Digital Swamp Foxes could build on the example described in that link.

It’s not about “going vigilante,” it’s about proper roles. It is not the government’s role to tell people what religion to believe or what political views to hold or who they shoould associate with. The gov’t only becomes involved if someone is doing or planning something illegal. It is, rather, the citizen who must be an advocate, activist, and organizer; who must argue, debate, refute, and champion.

“…the lack of organization , standards and goals”

The goals and standards are set by individuals and the organizations they create within the framework of the law. This goes on every day as people create businesses, charities, group blogs, shamanic drumming circles, political activist groups, wine-tasting clubs, etc.

“how do you defend yourself against charges that you yourselves are not simply a front for our Uncle?”

By creating private, non-governmental organizations and accepting no money from government, political parties or anyone you think would be a problem.

“Formal non-profit or just build it and let people come and go as they please?”

Yes and Yes. A citizen-directed movement can be made up of a variety of groups organized both formally as some kind of non-profit or informally such as people getting together to make a movie or hold a rally or in a decentralized network.

“who are you targeting and what is your goal? Jihadist sites? al-Jazeera? How do you measure effectiveness? Fewer suicide bombers? What are your baseline numbers now?”

Those are all good questions whose answers will be different from organization to organization depending on what each organization is trying to do.

The American way of propaganda: Lessons from the founding fathers

The founders’ message strategy was simple: Relentlessly tell the best about the American cause and the worst about the enemy.

Michael Tanji [TypeKey Profile Page]:

Phil: The government is perfectly justified in defending itself against false charges or claims, which is why I am suggesting they sow the seed of any “public” diplomacy effort (vice the sorry “public diplomacy” effort being carried out by the gov’t today). This isn’t/shouldn’t be about pimping a dogma, merely communicating facts and promoting principles.

Hopefully I wasn’t coming off as a black propaganda guy. ;-)
