the claremont effect

John Robb drives the point home in the latest City Journal:

Our choice is simple: we can rely exclusively on our current security systems to stop the threats—and suffer the consequences when they don’t—or we can take measures to mitigate the impact of these threats by exerting local control over essential services.

Whether it is a bridge collapse, a hurricane, or a terrorist attack, Uncle Sam isn’t going to show up with all the answers and total relief … immediately. Preparedness (individual responsibility) and resilience (pushing responsibility and capability down to the lowest level possible) is not only the way of the future, but the general consensus of the founders. In essence looking backwards to see the way forward. Going big is not merely bad economics and politics, it is almost assuredly deadly.
